Description
Alessandra Smith, a twenty-two year old college graduate, decides to spend her first summer after college visiting missionary friends in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire).
Her blended family supports her decision to travel; God provides for the trip; and Alessandra begins her adventure. At the Philadelphia airport, Alessandra meets Wesley, a business consultant for a diamond- mining company in the Congo. Their paths cross throughout the story, and the two become friends.
After landing in Kinshasa, Congo’s capital city, Alessandra flies to an interior town named Ilebo through the services of a missionary pilot. Once united with the Carmichaels and their ministry, Alessandra must acclimate to the shock of the cultural differences and learn the language of Congo’s unique people.
Without warning, the unimaginable happens: war erupts in eastern Congo. The counter revolution, the result of the new government’s broken promises, threatens the country’s stability. Fleeing government soldiers are wreaking havoc as they pass through interior villages, and Ilebo is right on their route to Kinshasa. Paralyzing fear grips Alessandra and the Carmichaels as the daily news from the front applies new levels of terror. Alessandra is forced to cast her fears back on the Lord while she confronts issues within her heart that she finds disturbing. During the climax of the story, Alessandra faces one obstacle after another as she attempts to leave the Congo and return to the safety of America’s shores.
Reunited with her family back in Yardley, Pennsylvania, Alessandra makes life-changing decisions about her attitude towards her blended family and matures in her relationship with the Lord.
